I have walked a lot of roofs in Texas, and if you asked me where the leak is before I climbed the ladder, my first guess would be the roof valley. Not the field of the roof, not the ridge. The valley. It is the one place where geometry, water volume, and installation shortcuts all meet, and it is where I find failures on roofs that otherwise look fine from the street.

Think about the surface area feeding into one. Two roof planes, each potentially several hundred square feet, both shedding into a single line maybe eighteen inches wide. During a heavy Texas downpour, that channel is moving water at a rate no other part of the roof experiences.

A woven valley traps material where two shingle courses overlap in the wettest part of the roof, and over time that becomes a slow dam.

This is the part homeowners never see and the part that decides whether the valley lasts.

A valley should have a continuous waterproof membrane running its full length before any shingle goes down, wide enough to extend well past where the shingles will be cut. On a good install it is a self-adhering membrane that seals around fasteners. On a rushed install it is a strip of felt, or it is nothing at all, and the shingles are simply expected to do the whole job.

How to check your own valleys from the ground

You do not need to get on the roof, and I would rather you did not.

1. Look down the valley line with binoculars. It should be clear and continuous. Pine needles, leaf packs, or a dark stripe of collected debris mean water is being slowed.
2. Look at the shingle edges along the valley. They should be flat and cut to a clean line. Lifted, curled, or ragged edges are where wind-driven water gets under.
3. Look at the ceiling inside, below where the valley ends. Valley leaks often show up several feet away from the actual entry point, because water travels along the decking before it drops.
4. Check the gutter at the bottom of the valley. Heavy granule accumulation there means the valley is scouring the shingle surface, which is a sign of high flow and a shortened life.

If two of those four look wrong, get someone on the roof. Not to sell you a replacement, just to look.

Can a valley be repaired without a new roof?

Often, yes. If the surrounding shingles still have life and the decking underneath is sound, a valley can be opened up, the underlayment corrected, metal installed, and the shingles reset. It is real work and it is not cheap, but it is a fraction of a replacement.
